CYENS Summer School Lecture on Transparency and Fairness in Gaming Algorithms

On July 19th, 2021, my colleague Pinar Barlas and I got invited from the CYENS Centre of Excellence to be part of their summer school program. The program was one week long and was entitled Gaming and Artificial Intelligence: Learn from experts how to develop your own games and apply AI techniques. The students who participated were in the age group of 14-18 years old.

We presented a 1h 15min lecture on the topic of Transparency and Fairness in Gaming Algorithms. Among others, we presented the notion of Algorithmic Transparency in systems/AI and its importance. Focusing on a specific family of cognitive services – the Image Tagging Algorithms (ITAs) – we demonstrated the implications around several Algorithmic Transparency related issues and provided a practical group exercise to test these systems on their own in order to check if they behave in the right manner, having also an extensive discussion at the end. In addition, we presented some recent real-world incidents on image tagging and gaming algorithms.

For me it was a fascinating experience, having the students actively involved and sharing their views on the matter of Algorithmic Transparency and its various implications. Teaching the youngsters who are passionate about technology is always interesting. The discussion we had on Algorithmic Transparency and their realizations made me clear that we’re heading to an era of brilliant minds!
